Background of the Study
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are common strategies used by firms to expand market share, enhance competitive advantage, and achieve economies of scale. The banking sector, in particular, has seen significant consolidation in recent years, especially in Nigeria, where regulatory changes and market dynamics often drive these processes. M&As can have a profound impact on the market share of the involved banks, influencing their financial performance and positioning within the sector (Musa & Umar, 2023). However, limited studies have focused on the specific effects of M&As on market share in banks operating in Yobe State.
This study will explore the effects of mergers and acquisitions on market share within the banking sector in Yobe State, examining both short-term and long-term impacts (Musa & Salihu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
While M&As may provide opportunities for increased market share, many banks in Yobe State may struggle with the integration process, customer retention, and brand identity post-merger or acquisition. The effects of these transactions on market share are not well understood, particularly in the context of regional banks (Tijani & Rauf, 2023).
